Deepening qualitative research to improve the care of patients with advanced and terminal disease
The ICS ATLANTES program is organizing a course on qualitative research for healthcare professionals
The ATLANTES program, which is affiliated with the Institute for Culture and Society (ICS), in collaboration with the University of Navarra's School of Nursing and the Department of Health and Social Development within the School of Nursing at the University of British Columbia in Canada, will host a qualitative research course aimed at healthcare professionals on March 10-12, 2016.
The course focuses on qualitative data analysis and aims to introduce healthcare professionals to this type of analysis, in addition to reviewing the basic principles and assumptions of qualitative research, studying common research designs (ethnography, phenomenology, narrative and grounded theory), exposing participants to predominant data analysis methods, and developing the necessary skills to undertake qualitative studies.
The confirmed speakers include Carole Robinson, who is a professor at the School of Nursing at the University of British Columbia in Canada, Olga Lopez de Dicastillo, who is a professor at the University of Navarra's School of Nursing, and José Miguel Carrasco and Maria Arantzamendi, both of whom are research fellows within the ATLANTES Program of the Institute for Culture and Society.
Understanding the human personQualitative research allows researchers to approach reality from the individual perspective and take a closer look at human beings, taking into account the contexts in which people live and how their personal experiences influence their life and behavior.
Understanding the motivations of people with advanced and terminal disease, as well as their goals in life, values, feelings, beliefs and preferences, is essential for healthcare professionals to work effectively. It is important to understand the experiences that people go through during this final phase of life (including patients, family members and healthcare professionals) to improve care and support patients who are in this situation.
