The article on human dignity and the dignity of work, written by Ignacio Ferrero, the Dean of the School of Economics and Business Administration; Alejo Sison, a professor of Business Ethics at the same School; and Gregorio Guitián, the Director of Research at the School of Theology, won second place in the Best Article Award organized by Business Ethics Quarterly.

The award, which was given by the scientific journal Business Ethics Quarterly (published by Cambridge University Press), ranked “Human Dignity and The Dignity of Work: Insights from Catholic Social Teaching” in second place on the list of the best articles published by the journal in 2016. The award will be handed out at the next annual conference of the Society for Business Ethics, which is to take place in Atlanta this August.

The article examines the contribution of Catholic Social Teaching and how it relates human dignity to the dignity of work. It also identifies the chief characteristics of human dignity based on the concept of man as created in God’s image, as espoused in Catholic Social Teaching. Ferrero, Sison and Guitián then go on to analyse the concept of the dignity of work as derived from two principles: the primacy of obligations over rights, and the prioritization of the subjective aspects of work over the objective. The authors also explain how the right to work and workers’ rights are subordinated to these principles, particularly in the context of globalization.

Ignacio Ferrero is the Dean of the School of Economics and Business Administration. He holds a PhD in Applied Economics from the University of Navarra with an Award for Excellence. He is a member of the Academy of Management and the European Business Ethics Network. He was a visiting scholar at Harvard University, Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame, and the Center for Business Ethics at Bentley University. He is a co-founder of the University of Navarra's Virtue Ethics in Business and Management research group.

Alejo José G. Sison is a professor of Business Ethics in the School of Economics and Business Administration. He became a full professor in 2015. He also edits a number of publications, such as the Journal of Business Ethics. Sison does research from the perspective of virtue ethics and the common good in areas where ethics, economics and politics overlap. Happiness and Virtue Ethics in Business (Cambridge University Press, 2015) is one of his most recent works.

Gregorio Guitián is the Director of Research at the School of Theology and an Adjunct Professor of Moral Theology. He holds a Degree in Management from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and a PhD in Theology from the Pontificia Università della Santa Croce. His field of research is social morality, with a particular focus on the moral aspects of economics. Guitián also teaches classes on Moral Issues in Economics and the Social Doctrine of the Church. He has undertaken research visits to the Catholic University of America and the Markets, Culture and Ethics Research Centre at the Pontificia Università della Santa Croce. He has also published articles in a number of scientific journals, such as the Journal of Business Ethics and the Journal of Markets & Morality.
