Introduction
The Ph.D. in Natural and Applied Sciences (PhD-NAS) brings together efforts from various areas of knowledge, creating a synergy that allow graduates from the program to successfully face the most important challenges of our time. Specifically, this program aspires to be the highest exponent of Science at the University of Navarra and to become a top-level reference both in terms of training and research.
The Ph.D. in Natural and Applied Sciences is part of the Graduate School of the University of Navarra. The center responsible for the development of the PhD-NAS is the School of Science.
It is a PhD. that is adapted to the European Higher Education Area, and meets the requirements set out in the Spanish regulation (RD 1393/2007), which establishes the organization of official higher education. PhD-NAS inherits Government quality mentions from its PhD parent programs.
The history of this doctoral program begins with the prior doctoral program entitled "Biology and Environment," adapted to the European Higher Education Area, which met the requirements of RD 1393/2007, which regulates official university education. That program received a positive review from the Council of Universities. It was an official degree program registered in the Registry of Universities, Centers and Qualifications (Official State Bulletin, Wednesday, February 10, 2010). Subsequently, the Doctoral Program in Biology and Environment was evaluated by ANECA (National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation) within the framework of the Citation of Excellence program; in this assessment it earned a favorable report and a score of 81 points.
The following University of Navarra departments and centers participate in the development of the program:
· Department of Environmental Biology
· Department of Chemistry and Soil Science
· Department of History, Art History and Geography
· Department of Environmental Engineering, CEIT (San Sebastián Campus)
The teaching and research activities of the Doctoral Program in Biology and Environment benefit from the collaboration of foreign universities and research centers. These activities enable participating departments to improve their teaching and research activities and to expand their partnerships with other research and teaching groups; it also allows participating doctoral candidates to pursue European doctoral degrees and doctoral dissertations under the joint advisor system, as well as to add other academic accomplishments (teaching and/or research) to their curriculum vitae.
All the departments involved in the proposed program work on international projects or are in contact with other highly regarded researchers and institutions. Partnership agreements and relationships with other universities and research centers (both Spanish and foreign) encourage student mobility and internationalization, thus ensuring that graduates gain an understanding of the international research and educational context.
