Doctoral Thesis
The doctoral student must prepare an original research work that must be defended before a tribunal. In order to obtain the degree of Doctor, the work must be published, at least in its substantial part (the Faculty facilitates the fulfillment of this requirement through the possibility of publishing an extract of the Doctoral Thesis in Doctoral Notebooks, with the prior approval of the examining board).
Regarding the formal aspects for the presentation of the doctoral thesis, the following indications should be followed:
Once the doctoral student and the director consider the writing of the thesis to be completed, the student will submit, through the director of the work, a copy of the thesis for final advising. This submission may be made at any time during the academic year. The advising professor has a period of twenty days, counted from the delivery of the copy to the advisor, to communicate his observations.
When the final text is available, once these observations have been received and studied, the student must submit an application to the Secretary's Office requesting admission to the defense of the thesis (downloadable here). In turn, the thesis director will send the scanned request, together with the doctoral thesis in pdf format, to the Secretary's Office of the Faculty (arazcona@unav.es) and to the Doctoral School of the University (escueladoctorado@unav.es), for its public exhibition during 15 working days.
Once this period has elapsed, the student will deliver to the Secretary's Office of the Faculty five paper copies - bound with spiral binding - signed by the director of the work (cfr. Formal aspects for the presentation of the doctoral thesis).
Once the copies of the thesis have been delivered to the Secretary's Office, the student will be informed in writing of the date, time and place of the thesis defense. The student will then proceed to pay the established fees. The defense of the doctoral thesis will take place in a public session before a panel of five professors.
The student will also enter in the miUNAV portal - with the collaboration of the Secretariat (arazcona@unav.es) - the UNESCO codes and a summary in Spanish and English of the content of the thesis, not exceeding 250 words each, including the title of the thesis and three key words.
Theses submitted for advising after April 1 will be defended from September onwards, since a period of approximately one month is required for the advising procedures, and two months for the public exhibition and reading of the thesis by the members of the examining board.
To obtain the title of Doctor (Doctor renuntiatus), once the corresponding Degree has been obtained, the publication of the thesis, in whole or in part, is required.
