Nine students from Spain, Puerto Rico and El Salvador make up the inaugural 2016-2017 Master of Social Science Research (MICS) class. The program, which is accredited by the ANECA, is coordinated by the Institute for Culture and Society in direct collaboration with the Schools of Communication, Law, Education and Psychology, Nursing, and Humanities and Social Sciences.

Four Students enrolled in the Master thanks to a grant from the Social Trends Institute, while two students were awarded an incentive scholarship from the University of Navarra and three more students were awarded University of Navarra-Grupo Santander scholarships.

The MICS is offered as a gateway for students who wish to start a career in interdisciplinary research in the social sciences. Within the program, students can major in one of six different areas, including communication, geography, linguistics, education, law and nursing.

María José Benitez, of El Salvador, has opted to major in education and psychology, noting that, as a lawyer, she has worked on issues related to protection from violence and to children; she will focus her thesis on related aspects. "I want to learn qualitative and quantitative tools. My goal is to collect data that can be used to develop good public policies based on evidence," she stated.

Pablo Quiñonero, a graduate in communication studies, explains that he has chosen to major in communication in order to "lean new research skills… I also study music at the conservatory,” he noted, “and I want to bring this knowledge to the field of communication."

Sofia Brotons, who has a degree in philosophy and journalism, has opted to combine psychology and linguistics: "I hope the master will serve as a tool to start a successful PhD. I have thought about researching language disorders and issues related to emotional intelligence."
