Madalena d'Oliveira-Martins, Ph.D. Student of the Institute for Culture and Society (ICS), at the University of Navarra, will be carrying out research in the Department of Sociology, at the University of Berkeley (USA), for a period of six months.

During this time, Madalena d´Oliveira will be working on an investigation program directed by Arlie Russell Hochschild, one of the pioneers in sociology of emotions, a fairly new field within social sciences which came into being at the end of the 20th century. Madalena d' Oliveira´s thesis addresses the issue of reflexive sociology and sociology of emotions, related to the expert's studies and opinions on this subject.

"Building on this approach -points out Madalena- this author tackles essential topics of contemporary society, such as contradictions in modern life, changes in the economic situation of women, female reconciliation of work and family life, and the balance between private and public. "

Human identity and authenticity

"I would like her to make a reflection on what she says in her book", explains Madalena. "I will try to offer constructive criticism on the topics she has dealt with. My purpose is to assess the extent of her contributions to a discussion that correctly defines modernity and its limits." Madalena points out that these issues are related to human identity and its authenticity, two concepts closely related to the ICS project "Emotional Culture and Identity", with which she collaborates.
After her stay in U.S.A, Madalena D'Oliveira-Martins will return to Pamplona to complete her doctorate, under the direction of Professor Lourdes Flamarique.
