The Gamer Citizen: Fortnite and Civic Virtues
This study ambitions to depict the characteristics of the “gamer citizen” in his relation to the acquisition or not of civic virtues using as a case study the phenom of Epic Game’s “Fortnite”. It aims to answer how gamer citizens respond to the structures that remain permanent in the function and dynamics of democracy. Fortnite was created in 2017, it embodies 254 million players, 60% of them ranging from the age of 18 to 24. In the Digital Age we have witnessed the upsurge of a plurality of virtual communities. Yet not enough attention has been paid to the formation of identity and sense of belonging of gamer communities, (whose “members” are predominately formed by children and young adults), in relation to the exercise of the quality of the citizenship they will or already undertake.
